Think about when you were in the lower grades of elementary school. There was always one thing that seemed a big odd about the whole thing: most, if not all, of your teachers were women. They could have been young, old, some even pregnant at some point but they all were in fact women. But why is this so? Is there any reason why men tend to teach high school and middle school while women dominate the lower grades?
There is one chief reason why women are teaching the lower grades such as preschool and kindergarten: because they are perceived as more gentle. Oftentimes, smaller children can be easily intimidated by men. This could be because their father was the disciplinarian of their household or because they see men as more intimidating on TV. Really there could be a litany of reasons but being scared of men is probably the first one.
Think of whatever young children you know. They aren’t always crying for daddy and their older brothers are they. They may see these figures in their lives as role models or people to look up to and listen to but the mother is oftentimes seen as the one that they are closest to. Schools want to capitalize on this by bringing them into the classroom to make the kids more comfortable.
Why risk making kids scared to come to school because they may be scared of the teacher. Teachers from younger grades are often much more caring and just nice in general. Since it’s easier for women to appear this way, they are usually the best cast as teachers in younger grades.
It’s nearly impossible for an adult male to find a job in the younger grades. They’re rarely seen and end up having to take jobs in the higher up grades because they are more plentiful and schools aren’t scared of intimidating the older kids. Usually, that’s the kind of quality they need to keep these students in line.
So if you’re a man and thinking about becoming a kindergarten teacher, you can probably forget about it. Stick to the upper grades, because women have the lower ones on lock.
